Please CDPR, we really need a fix for this. This isn't fair to the customers who purchased and support GOG.
I bought a GOG copy because I wanted to support CDPR and their platform but it's getting a bit frustrating knowing my friends who bought on Steam can use the Steam overlay and their steam controller perfectly fine while I'm stuck not being able to use it unless I delete DLL files and put up with 2 minute load times.

There is a "fix" floating around regarding deleting/moving 2 DX DLL files however this is not a good fix because once you install and start HOS (base game unaffected), load times increase by literally 3-4x until you put those DLL files back. Its possible to disable the SMAPI console, which should allow the overlay to work, but there are several drawbacks to doing that. While it would be feasible to do this on a headless server with a beefy processor and minimal graphical power, you're almost certainly going to get better results if a decent enough GPU is used on the host. You can disable the Steam overlay through the Settings or Preferences menu, depending on whether you're using a PC or Mac, respectively. In order to invite friends to a game I have to click the invite button in-game, and then alt-tab out of the game and invite them through Steam friends chat from the Steam client. Does the hosting machine need powerful graphics or would a headless Xeon PC server work well? I ask as I am looking at getting one anyway to host opensim and that only being a database doesn't require much in the way of a GPU the graphics being handled by the client viewer. The Steam overlay has not worked for me or my linux-using friends in over two years.
